baby listening to musicBabies in the neonatal unit exposed to quiet music achieve the weight they need to be discharged sooner than the other infants.  Patients of all ages recover faster.  Young chil­dren exposed to music show enhanced language development and mathematical abilities by activating existing neural connections and “sprouting” new ones. Businesses find that they become more productive when music is played in the employee’s environment.  Employees need fewer sick days, healthcare insurance costs may be reduced, and employee retention is improved.

 

Medical Benefits

 

In experiments conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee investigating the physiologic effects of music, subjects were asked to use the bath­room if necessary, and to relax in a comfortable bed.  The lights were lowered, telephones were unplugged, curtains drawn, and doors closed.  Participants were advised to clear their minds and to allow their muscles to relax.  They were given a mini CD player with headphones to listen to a 20-minute recording of music.

The most consistent findings were a reduc­tion in anxiety and agita­tion, reduction in heart rate, respiratory rate and systolic blood pressure and an interruption of the stress response. Music stops the body’s reactions to stress and begins a new response that promotes healing and well-being.  Activity of the sympathetic nervous system, known to suppress the immune system and contribute to the onset of life-threatening heart problems and disease, is replaced with increased activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, which protects the heart, boosts the immune system and promotes health.
